Every couple of months I like to have #SteakhouseNight, whereby I cook for myself or others, a dish fit for a steakhouse. I love steakhouses, among many types of cuisine, but I figured out years ago that there aren’t many restaurants where you can order a steak and expect to be happy with it. Tonight’s special was a filet mignon with a salt and pepper crust, sliced over a baby spinach salad with sprinkles of craisins, candied pecans, gorganzola crumbles and an impromptu orange vinagrette dressing. Pretty much crushing it over here.
Well, the cooking was better than the ‘capping today. Had a pick 3 at Belmont ($59) and the late double ($28) at Belmont as well, but couldn’t connect on the big pick 4 there. Had two small tickets. If I had played one big one, I’d have hit it.
The horse of the day was Just A Little Hope at Santa Anita, who looked like a monster in the paddock, and ran like one on the track, outfinishing a 7/5 Baffert firster. Didn’t look like Stevens needed the stick at all, so that’s one to watch for the future. Could be any type.
Special mention to GG Ryder (23.80) at Golden Gate Fields. Surprised they let him go at that price, and needed every step to win by a nostril. I love veteran, hard knocking horses that bring it every time, and half that field met the criteria. I haven’t been to Golden Gate Fields in person yet, just the old Bay Meadows, so the Gate will be on the list for the California trip I am starting to scheme.
Happy Memorial Day everyone . . . always feels like an odd thing to say, but I suppose that it’s the start of summer that makes us happy . . .
