Happy New Year

The new year starts on a positive note as Secreto Primero closed with a rush to finish second yesterday, paying a robust 4.80 in the middle, resulting in a 47.6 percent profit on our original wager …. no plays today. I’ll have one eye on Santa Anita, and I’m curious to see Baker Mayfield play against Georgia.

I feel so …. unsatisfied

Was the bridesmaid twice yesterday as Restoring Hope and Hope Wins both ran non-threatening thirds. They will stay on watch. Classy Atlantic and (Warren G’s ?) Regulate climb on to the lists with solid performances in those two maiden races. Kathy’s Song ran a nice ground-saving third as anticipated, but Madame Dancelot’s tremendous late kick blew us out of the trifecta as New Money Honey came up short at the end of a long year of racing. I anticipated better from her with the scratch of Rymska.

ONE FOR TODAY — Secreto Primero in the first at Santa Anita down the hill. Was hemmed in at the top of the stretch in last before getting out and rallying late. A better trip should get it done today.

Happy New Year, to one and all !

12/30 Plays

Two watch horse playbacks today, at Santa Anita. Race 1 – Hope Wins. Race 2 – Restoring Hope. What a coincidence with the names. Let’s HOPE for a great day !

I have a note on Kathy’s Song in the American Oaks, however, she recently won up at Golden Gate, and draws a pair of tough Chad Brown invaders in Rymska and New Money Honey. I also have been keeping an eye on Coachwhip, who comes down from Golden Gate, has been transferred to Richard Mandella, and will be rolling late. I need to take a closer look at the pace scenario, but I’ll look to use Kathy’s Song and Coachwhip underneath to create some value in the trifectas.

YESTERDAY- Cascade Rock ran a strong 2nd and paid 4.20 in the middle, creating a 29 percent profit with our wagering schedule.

Today’s Watch Horse

#10 Cascade Rock in Race 3 at Santa Anita comes off of a game try and is 6-1 on morning line. Gets top turf jock Nakatani and draws outside coming down the hill. Gets a tough foe in Oiseau de Guerre, who may make for a good pairing in the exacta or multi race plays. Good luck.

A Look Ahead – Plan for 2018 and New Year’s Resolutions

The ‘capper is working on his calendar for 2018 and his racing resolutions There are two major tenets to it, which are intertwined:

1. Be a more disciplined player

2. Focus on a large handful of major events and fewer tracks

The ‘capper still holds down a 9-5. Say what you will, health insurance and a defined benefit pension plan are both wonderful things!

I started formalizing this plan last May as I prepped for the Saratoga meet. But I didn’t follow it that well, to be honest. It did make me start tracking trips in a more earnest and formalized way, which has been the biggest benefit. But I’m still a victim of my own boredom, and I have a tendency to start firing on a weekday afternoon or evening, just to take the edge off. (Hey, I rarely drink, and don’t smoke or use drugs, it’s gotta be something !). But clearly, the action plays became way too big of a portion of my bankroll.

So with that in mind, my day to day focus will be only on my trip horses. Generally I’ll play these as my 1 unit Win, 1.6 unit place bets, and will look to grind out a profit. In the event that they dip into even-money territory, they will be simply a Win bet, or I’ll look to wring out some value by keying in a tri or exacta. I’ll be applying the Kelly method of bankroll management. I’ll also split my bankroll into portions for Win/place playbacks; multi-race wagers, and a small percentage for action plays, which will literally be limited to $2 Win/Place wagers. (I swear ! Writing it here actually helps me to be more accountable to it!)

My focus will be the Gulfstream

Championship meet on a limited basis, plus the Kentucky Derby trail in the spring. As the action moves to Belmont, I’ll turn my focus there and play mostly the turf, and prep for Saratoga.

Derby Weekend, Preakness Weekend, and Belmont Weekend are circled on the calendar. I’m going to lay off of Keeneland, where my strike rate is lower.

Saratoga is my Super Bowl. Last year, I fired early and often. This year, I’m going to strive to be more patient, but with my archive of trip horses more well stocked, I should be well poised to attack the meet. I plan to spend more time on track this year.

Travers Is my favorite race day of the year, and likely will be the peak of my handle as I will have a long list of playbacks by that point in the summer, plus the great stakes action offers the chance for overlays and big multi-race scores.

From there, I’ll move back to Belmont, and start prepping for the breeders cup weekend.

My secondary focus is the West Coast and the Santa Anita, Del Mar, Los Al circuit. There’s some dual logic here, as the afternoon/ evening timeframe let’s me see a ton of races from the west coast, and when you’re in the throes of winter in the Northeast, it’s damn nice to enjoy horses racing down the hill surrounded by palm trees on a sunny day, even if its on a 60 inch plasma screen rather than in person. TVG does a great job with their West Coast coverage.

So there’s the plan for 2018. Would love to hear about your handicapping resolutions for the new year in the comments below.

Trust The Process

Played two horses today. You’re to Blame at Gulfstream and Sensible Myth at Santa Anita. I got a 3rd and a second by a combined nostril, losing a 3 way photo then getting nailed up the rail.

It resulted in a 5.2 percent profit. AND I HATED IT.

So I fired in a pick 5 and a pick 4 after speed capping horses I didn’t love. And squandered almost the original investment. The trip horses pay, and return multiple dividends. Former watcher Giant Expectations won and paid $29.00 today. Didn’t use him straight, but had him in a double to watcher Sensible Myth, who got nailed an improbable half nostril up the rail costing me a $74 double.

Gotta stay the course and love the grind.

Best Burgers

Spending some time with the family over the holidays, (perhaps a few too many given the weather and travel schedule!), but before the weather got too bad had a chance to try out one of the “Best Burgers in Maine” as recommended by DownEast Magazine, crushing this twin burger basket at Bob’s Clam Hut on the way north.

Solid all-American fare, like an old time diner burger. Been to Bob’s many times in my travels but almost always went for clams, shrimp, or the lobster roll. Sure beats stopping for fast food on the drive! Burgers were not to big or too small, probably 3 oz each, with a slightly egg-y roll, and excellent coleslaw to boot. Definitely good if you wanna fill up. But if I stop on the way out, I’m not missing out on the clams !

Keep Watching …

Played two watch horses in the last two days. Today Soglio 7.20 win / 4.20 to place at Gulfstream, and yesterday they let Little No Way go at 11-1 with Javy up. He came rolling on the turn, and just got nailed by a long nose on the wire by the 3/2 favorite, but paid 6.80 in the middle, and completed a $48 exacta. The watch list will be a big part of the 2018 game plan … which will be posted in a couple days.

The “Vegas Flu”

Cashed last night with the Golden Knights. Had some intel that the Lightning drank the bar dry a couple nights before at a team dinner in Vegas. This is turning into a real live angle. Saw another journalist earlier this year (pardon the lack of attribution as I don’t have it at hand) write that “some day, the real story will come out” about what happened to the team he was covering the two nights before they played in Vegas. Many teams are getting to Vegas early, and 20-something hockey players being 20-something hockey players, you have to realize some of these guys are going to be a little leg-weary when they hit the ice ! Cash it !!

2018 Derby Preps

As you plan your spring, here’s a handy schedule of the derby preps (credit to GamingToday for the graphic) … I’m putting some finishing touches on my schedule of play for 2018, which will be outlined in a future post, but you could wager that the schedule above will be a key component of my slate.
